European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
