Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
