This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, once the current storyline wraps up, the anime will take a three-month break until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
From now on, the series will release two seasons every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and timing of the source material.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.
Learning from Past Breaks
The One Piece anime had a six-month pause that began in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the comic to get further ahead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to supply viewers with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.
Embracing Seasonal Format
Although some recap episodes appeared during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the news, this may result in one episode of the anime adapting a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.
It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the traditional method of production, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course itself have so many side stories, and the quality of the art can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in seasons, with a couple maximum coming out each annually, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
