Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
